There are images you will inevitably, repeatedly run into over your life solely by being a part of society — chances are, Harry Benson shot one of them.
From the Beatles, to starlets, Benson captured the leaders of the creative class. My favorite photo featured though, was taken of his daughter launching off of a diving board.
Maybe it’s because I’m a new parent myself, eager to capture my sons adventures, or maybe it’s because I can imagine a stack of negatives representing his families whole life — a tangible relic, captured on silver.
Benson is in his 80s when this was made, and looking back is the main theme of the film. He’s still got a spark though!
A quirkiness that takes the form of funny voices and self deprecating jokes, he’s relatable and unassuming. You can easily see how he rub elbows with the rich and famous. Yet, it’s balanced by a strong work ethic, rigor and seriousness about some of his subjects (the KKK and a presidential assignation) to name a few.
The things I took away from this film were more about his approach, attitude and personality than his techniques. Definitely worth a watch, it’s astonishing and inspiring to see how much one lifetime can capture.
